Schwartz Foundation Research Scholar Award Recipient

The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Foundation for Digestive Health and Nutrition (FDHN) announced this year’s recipient of the Bernard Lee Schwartz Foundation Research Scholar Award — Kenneth P. Olive, PhD. The $225,000 gift from the Bernard Lee Schwartz Foundation will provide Dr. Olive with funding and protected time for three years to focus on basic science related to pancreatic cancer. Mr. Schwartz, a businessman and photographer, suffered from the disease and died in 1978 at the age of 64. His family has honored his memory by establishing this new three-year Research Scholar Award for pancreatic cancer research.

Steven Ackerman of University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Medicine and Dr. Glenn Furuta, his colleague at the University of Colorado Denver, 2008 AGA Foundation Translational Research Award Recipients, are investigating eosinophilic esophagitis, an inflammatory disease in which defense cells called eosinophils mistakenly attack the esophagus, which causes it to narrow until food can't pass.

The sons of the late R. Robert and Sally D. Funderburg have committed $1 million to the American Gastroenterological Association Foundation to double the funding for the existing R. Robert and Sally D. Funderburg Research Award in Gastric Biology Related to Cancer. The annual award will increase to $100,000 from the current $50,000 provided to each grant recipient.
