Physicians Lead The Way: Pathways of Discovery
Through the efforts of physician volunteers and the generosity of their patients, young investigators have recently received generous grants from the AGA Foundation for Digestive Health and Nutrition (FDHN) and are hard at work at groundbreaking digestive disease research.
In Chicago, Dr. Sarah Camille Glover has focused her efforts on post-neoplastic transformation and metastasis in order to better understand and ultimately defeat colon cancer, the second-leading cause of cancer mortality in the United States.
In Philadelphia, Dr. Kenneth Yu is studying the use of serum protein biomarkers to diagnose pancreatic cancer at the earliest possible stage.
In both cases, the Research Scholar Awards presented to Dr. Glover and to Dr. Yu were donated by patients of gastroenterologists who are members of the Regional Physician Advisory Boards of the AGA Foundation.
Importantly, in addition to conducting leading edge research now, the investigators who receive these AGA Awards are being materially assisted with their plans to develop lifetime careers in gastroenterological research. “I have aspirations of becoming an independent investigator with a rich research program dedicated to the study of pancreatic cancer,” said Dr. Yu. “By providing me with both protected time and financial resources, this award is an important step toward that goal.”
FDHN physician volunteers are opening pathways of discovery today for the science and practice of gastroenterology in the future.
